The Free Port of Trieste is an extraterritorial customs regime established by international treaty and operating on the European TEN-T transport corridors. Goods stored inside it are physically in Europe but have not yet been imported into the European Union: duties and VAT stay suspended until entry into the EU. Trieste is the northernmost deep-water port in the Mediterranean, and goods landed here reach Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and southern Germany without crossing the Alps.
